So Long Sugar, Until the Turkey Comes

Confession: I have a major sweet tooth. I love home-baked goodies. I love hot chocolate. I wish I could be as strong at Fit Mom Lori who has no refined sugar in her house. But what about cake pops? And dark chocolate? And cream cheese chocolate chip cookies? There’s nothing like a homemade treat made with real butter and real (processed and refined) sugar. But refined sugar has no nutritional value whatsoever. In fact, it is really bad for you.

That being said, I am personally okay with most things moderation. Even treats. But what does that mean? Once a week? Once a day? Once every five minutes?

Lately I have been getting away from moderation and into obsession. At least one treat almost every day. Or maybe two. Or like the other night when I had four chocolate chip cookies. (They were so good.) And because I am consuming more sugar, I crave it more. I am still working out hard so it is not really affecting my body visibly, but I know it is not good for me.

But I decided (and dragged my husband along with me because it is easier when someone else is doing it with you) that I was going to cut out sugar for a while. My husband is a bit more extreme than me so he said “No sugar until Thanksgiving.”

That is crazy.

I responded “One treat a week until Thanksgiving.” (I don’t like doing things too extreme because I feel it sets you up for failure and then you bail on the whole thing – thus the treat allowance.)

His comeback “One treat every two weeks until Thanksgiving.”

Fine. No sugar – not even maple syrup or honey, which are natural sugars. (I know sugar is in just about everything like milk, bread, etc. We are not cutting out all that. Just treaty things.)

It’s on. Started on Wednesday, September 28th.

How are you doing on your sugar intake? Do you want to marry it like I do? Do you want to join Shiloh and I on this little treat fast? Once you go public it is hard to turn back . . .

At Least You’re Not A Cow

Look at her legs – they are so long and slender!
Man, I wish I had abs like that.
Wowser – look at her arms. She could totally beat me up.

Comparisons. We all do it from time to time. Or all the time. Last month I talked about comparison.
Totally not helpful. Even if we are fit and healthy, we will not look like that girl. Because we are not her. We all have different shapes and sizes. No matter how healthy we eat or how much we workout. We will always have our basic, God-given frame. I will always have my dad’s stocky build. I will never have little, skinny legs. And that’s okay. I just won’t be buying any skinny jeans.

This month I challenge to you accept your body type. Whatever it is. Take that body type you have and get fit with it.  And be thankful your don’t have this bod.

Reduce, Let Go, Switch it Up – So Your Head Doesn’t Fall Off

The last few days I have been in a bad mood. Crabby. Sad. Impatient. Annoyed with my kids. Not sure exactly why, but I think I am overwhelmed by my “to do” list.

I’ve been working out almost every day, which I need. It’s healthy. Makes me feel better (not while I’m doing it, but afterwards). I don’t get discouraged by the 20-year-old non post-partum bodies I see on the Insanity DVD, but I do think man, they must have a lot of time to work out.

While I am choosing to workout consistently the laundry is piling up. For every 40-60 minutes I spend in front of the television jumping around and hoping that my body parts don’t fall out or off, I lose 40-60 minutes doing something else. So while I am getting healthy physically something else on my to do list is being neglected.

I guess what I am saying is that I can’t do it all. Even when it comes to just exercise.  And that can be frustrating. Most days I can accept that and move along. Some days I feel like I am sinking and would rather drink hot chocolate than exercise.

I actually like to exercise. Well, that’s not entirely true. Sometimes while I am doing it, I want to quit. I want to lie on the floor and find a happy place. But I certainly cherish the benefits of exercise. I feel so much better physically and emotionally after I’ve exercised. If I had the time I would probably exercise six days a week. But after trying to workout six days a week to keep up with the Insanity regimen I’ve learned that I just can’t do that. Right now. While my kids are little. While they are not in school. So I have switched it up to every other day and am finding that to be much more manageable.

What about you? Is there something in your life you need to switch up so you can keep up with something else? Is there something that you need to let go of, reduce, or reschedule so you can keep your head from falling off?

(Wendy’s disclosure: This post was written a few months ago. My head has not fallen off and I completed round one of every other day Insanity, and now I’m on round two!)

(Annett’s comment: Insanity is a workout program for insane folks like Wendy, and really kicks your butt.  :) )
