Organic Living

We are an organic family; we eat organic foods. But organic living means more than just nutrition to me.

Organic means going to the original source, it means cutting out the middle man, it means tuning in to the moment, creating community, treating others kindly, living true to the unique and wonderful being that God created in you.

Is this a healthier and more abundant lifestyle? I think so. I know it is for our family.

I am the organic mommy here on Fit Moms, Fit Kids Club. Far from being an expert, I am here to share my family’s journey from conventional living to organic living, from sickness to health, from consumers to producers, from wasters to recyclers, from junk food to nutritious food, from twaddle to substance, from passive acceptance to active change.

I am here to share what we have done, how we have changed our eating and living habits. I’ll share about food sources, recipes, skin care, cleaning supplies, plastics, composting, gardening, recycling, attachment parenting, homeschooling, building community and living a simpler lifestyle.

Look, we are no super family. I am no super mom. We’re pretty normal, as far as normal goes. But we do make conscientious choices, every day, to live healthy and to love each other.

I hope we can all grow healthy together.

    Hi Lori!

I have looked thru some of your blog posts and really appreciate what you have to say. My family has been trying the organic-healthy-eating route and it has really been challenging. My children are 5, 4 and 7 months. My 4 year old could live on fruits and vegetables so the change has been easy for him. My 5 year old however is very picky. Every night is a huge fight to get him to eat his vegetables. I am worn down and fighting the urge to throw in the towel. He has had stomach problems for years and I know that having more vegetables and fruits would help with that. Do you have any advice for me? I am not the most creative cook and have no real experience with cooking vegetables aside from stir-frys and soup. I could use easy, practical advice and possibly a cookbook suggestion. Please help :)

    Hi Kim,

I just saw your post; so sorry for the late reply. Good for you to put effort into feeding your kids healthy, real foods!

Here is what we do at my house: I only buy and/or make acceptable foods, so that when it is snack time, anything the kids pick will be a suitable choice. Check out this post for snacks that my kids like:

As far as food battles, I just don’t fight. I serve my kids small portions, and then allow the child to eat. If the child wants seconds, he knows he must finish what is on his plate. After dinner, if any plates still have food, I set the plate aside, and label with the owner’s name. If the child wants a snack after dinner, he knows that he must finish what is on his plate. I find that when I allow the child to control his own eating, within the parameters I described above, everything goes more smoothly. There is no need to battle — the child can choose to eat, or not eat. And after he has eaten, I know that all available snack choices are healthy.

If your child has stomach problems, and assuming that you have already consulted your pediatrician, you may want to look into an elimination diet for your son, as outlined here:

I know the link above is directed towards nursing moms, but it is easily applicable to anyone with digestion issues.

Lastly, my goal is to compose a small cookbook of my family’s favorite recipes, and offer it here, but that may not be until the summer. I do include a recipe with every post here. Though I don’t generally use recipes now, when I was a new mom, I relied heavily on the Better Homes and Garden’s cookbook, making sure to use organic produce, free range, no hormone animal products, and whole grains. I also use coconut oil in place of shortening, and non-GMO vegetable oils. I find that baked goods come out fine when using half whole wheat and half almond flour, in place of white flour.

Good luck to you, Kim, and kudos for your conscientious mommy spirit!

    Lori
